Housing – Commercial Caging

In taking on a monitor that regulates bodily processes using somewhat deep soil burrows and that requires a higher humidity gradiant than other animals, we’ve seen a few requirements in the previous sections. First, we can take the average in-the-wild burrow depth and see we’ll need soil two feet deep. Second, we know that lots of ventilation (such as a screen top) kills any chance of holding humidity. So we’ll need an enclosure that’s completely enclosed with very little ventilation.

What can we buy off the shelf that satisfies these requirements? Currently, very little. No ready-made commercial cage available on the market today is both fully enclosed will hold two feet of substrate.

Since the first iteration of this site, there are a few “herp culture” cage companies that have begun offering custom work. It’s likely one could procure a custom cage from one of these companies, but it’s also likely more cost effective to build a cage ourselves.
